OCTOBER 2024

1 Oct – the male lands at 5:50 and goes into the box. He returns to the ledge at 6:00 and goes into the box when XRF arrives at 6:40. He is followed in by the juvenile, so he flies out. XRF sits on the ledge until flying off at 6:50. The adult pair arrive together at 7:40 and go into the box for bonding. The male soon leaves, and the female leaves a few minutes later with scraps of pigeon. The male is back at 14:20, goes into the box for five minutes, then flies out. The pair are back in the box at 16:20. Again, the male is quick to leave whilst the female remains tending the scrape and feeding on scraps until 17:00.

1 October 2024 – Video: the pair continue to bond though the year.

2 Oct – XRF arrives with Feral Pigeon prey at 13:45 followed quickly by the female. The juvenile goes into the box and the female flies off. She is back ten minutes later, stands on the platform looking out, then watches the juvenile feeding in the box. She flies off at 14:15 whilst the juvenile continues feeding. XRF leaves with the remains of its meal at 14:40. It returns a few minutes later and goes into the box and the female lands on the ledge. She goes into the box, but the juvenile does not want to give up its meal. Eventually, the female takes over and XRF moves to the ledge. At 15:15, the juvenile tries to snatch the female’s meal but is pushed away and stands on the platform calling. The female soon finishes feeding and sits on the ledge before flying off. The juvenile picks at scraps in the box until moving to the ledge at 15:30 and flying off ten minutes later. The male arrives at 16:35 and goes into the box. He returns to the ledge at 16:50 and flies off at 17:00.

3 Oct – the pair arrive together at 9:25 and go into the box for a bout of bonding. The male flies off ten minutes later, but the female remains until 10:05. XRF lands on the ledge an hour later with a full crop and flies off at 11:40. The male lands briefly at 15:40. The female flies in for a few minutes at 16:45. The male is back on the ledge at 17:40 and remains until 18:15.

3 October 2024 – Video: the pair bonding in the box (male on the left).

4 Oct – the male lands briefly at 10:40. He is back on the ledge at 14:05 but is displaced by XRF at 14:30. The juvenile remains on the ledge with a full crop until 15:15 when the female arrives. She goes into the box to tend the scrape and feed on scraps. XRF returns a few minutes later and the female flies out at 15:30. The juvenile leaves at 16:55. At 23:20 the female flies in carrying fresh Teal prey which she stashes by a column, then sits on the ledge until midnight.

4 October 2024 – Video: the male is displaced by the arrival of XRF.

5 Oct – the female remains on the ledge until 6:50 when XRF flies in to claim the stashed Teal. The juvenile drags the meal into the box then sits on the ledge and flies off at 7:10. The male arrives a few minutes later and grabs the stashed meal and flies off with it. The female is back at 7:35 and checks the box before leaving a few minutes later. The juvenile is back at 8:50 carrying fresh Feral Pigeon prey and takes it into the box. The female lands briefly a few moments later. XRF has finished feeding at 9:35 and sits on the ledge with a full crop. The female flies in at 12:35 and feeds on the remains of the pigeon in the box. At 13:10, the juvenile runs to the female and she flies out. XRF watches her go, then returns to look for the meal but has been eaten, so it picks at scraps then sits on the ledge at 13:20 and flies off 15 minutes later. It is back at 14:35 and sits on the ledge. The male lands at 15:25 but is quickly forced off by the juvenile who leaves five minutes later. The male is back at 15:55 and goes into the box and tends to the scrapes until flying out at 16:25.

6 Oct – XRF arrives at 6:45 but leaves after 15 minutes. The female lands on the ledge at 8:15, checks the box then flies off. There is no more activity until the male lands at 21:35 and remains on the ledge until midnight.

7 Oct – the male remains on the ledge until 6:55. The female flies in at 7:10 carrying very fresh Feral Pigeon prey. XRF quickly follows and takes the meal from her. She flies out whilst the juvenile plucks and feeds on the platform, then drags it into the box. The female lands at 7:25 and picks at a few scraps, then flies off. XRF has finished feeding at 7:35 and moves to the ledge. The female lands a few moments later but the juvenile jumps at her and forces her to fly off and then follows. The female quickly returns and feeds on the remains of the pigeon before flying out with the meal at 8:00. The male flies in at 14:40 until 16:05.

8 Oct – the male lands briefly at 12:50. The pair fly in together at 13:55 and go into the box. The male quickly leaves, and the female flies out at 14:05 after attending to the scrape. XRF lands a few minutes later and goes into the box. The juvenile stands in the scrape and its actions seem to be building the scrape – this is the first time I have seen a juvenile do this. It leaves at 14:15.

8 October 2024 – Video: XRF moves stones in the scrape – the first time I have seen this behaviour in a juvenile.

9 Oct – the male lands at 15:10 and goes into the box to tend to the scrape, then leaves ten minutes later. He is back at 16:20 pursued by XRF who forces him from the ledge into the box. The juvenile follows him and pushes him from the box, then flies off.

10 Oct – the male lands briefly at 11:15 and again at 12:15. He returns at 16:50 and goes into the box, moving back to the ledge at 17:05 and flying off 20 minutes later.

11 Oct – XRF flies into the box at 11:25 then flies out after five minutes. It is back an hour later and sits on the ledge with a full crop until 13:05. The female flies in at 18:35 and tends both scrapes for 15 minutes, then flies out. The male lands on the ledge at 19:10 with a full crop and remains until midnight.

12 Oct – the male remains on the ledge sleeping until XRF lands at 7:05; he flies off and the juvenile quickly follows. XRF is back at 8:15 for 35 minutes. The adult pair fly in together at 10:15. The male quickly leaves, and the female tends the scrapes, then flies out at 10:40. XRF flies in at 12:35 carrying part-eaten Feral Pigeon and goes into the box. The female lands immediately after but quickly flies off. XRF stashes the meal by a column and sits on the ledge where it remains until 16:30 when it returns to the stashed meal and feeds leaving just a few scraps. It moves back to the ledge at 17:15 and flies off ten minutes later. The adult pair land at 17:30 with the female going into the box. The male sits on the ledge but is quickly knocked off by the arrival of XRF. The female feeds on the scraps whilst the juvenile calls at her from the ledge. She flies off after five minutes but XRF remains until 18:15.

13 Oct – XRF arrives at 7:10 and flies off 15 minutes later. There is no further activity today.

14 Oct – the male lands at 1:15 and falls asleep. He remains until XRF arrives at 6:55 and forces him from the ledge. The juvenile flies out at 7:15. There is no further activity today.

15 Oct – there was no activity today.

16 Oct – the only activity on camera today was the male landing on the ledge at 22:45 where he remained until midnight.

17 Oct – the male flies off at 00:20. XRF lands briefly at 6:45. The male is back at 12:35 and sits on the ledge with a full crop until 13:15. He returns immediately with the female. They have a few moments bonding then he leaves, and she follows a few moments later. The juvenile is back at 14:10 for 20 minutes. The male returns at 16:20 for ten minutes. He is back at 21:10 with a full crop and remains until midnight.

18 Oct – the male remains sleeping on the ledge until XRF arrives at 7:20 and goes into the box. He flies off and the juvenile moves to the ledge but flies off ten minutes later. The female lands at 9:45 until 10:10. The pair arrive together at 18:10. The female goes into the box whilst the male sits on the ledge. He flies off after five minutes and she follows five minutes later. 

19 Oct – XRF flies in at 12:00 but leaves a few minutes later. The male arrives briefly at 12:45 and again a few minutes later. He is back at 15:20 remaining until 16:40.

20 Oct – XRF flies in at 7:10 for 20 minutes. The adult pair arrive at 8:00 but the male soon leaves. The female remains in the box tending the scrape until 8:15 when she moves to the ledge and flies off at 8:50. The male is back at 16:30 until 17:10. He is back at 18:00 quickly followed by XRF but the juvenile forces him from the ledge and also leaves soon after. The male is back at 18:30 and falls asleep until midnight.

21 Oct – the male remains on the ledge from the previous evening. He is joined by the female at 5:55. He flies off at 6:30 and she leaves 20 minutes later. The male then flies in at 22:30 carrying fresh Redwing prey which he stashes by a column. He then falls asleep on the ledge until midnight.

22 Oct – the male flies out at 3:55 and leaves the Redwing meal in the box. He is back on the ledge at 4:50 and falls asleep. He is awake at 6:55 and plucks and feeds on his meal then stashes it by a column and flies off at 7:20. He returns with the female at 8:35 and the pair go into the box but he quickly leaves. She leaves five minutes later picking up the stashed meal on the way.

23 Oct – the male lands briefly at 10:00 and is quickly joined by the female. They go into the box, but he soon leaves, and she flies out a few minutes later. The pair fly in again at 18:15 and go into the box. The male leaves quickly but the female remains for ten minutes tending the scrapes, then flies out.

24 Oct – there was no activity on camera today.

25 Oct – the pair arrive together at 17:40 and go into the box. The male leaves after five minutes and the female flies out a few minutes later. There is no activity thereafter.

26 Oct – the juvenile XRF lands at 15:50 and goes into the box picking at scraps. It flies off ten minutes later. There is no further activity today.

27 Oct – the male lands at 1:05 and sits on the ledge with a full crop until leaving at 6:10. The female flies in at 10:20 carrying fresh Feral Pigeon prey and is quickly followed by XRF. She plucks and feeds on her meal whilst the juvenile sits on the ledge. She has finished feeding at 12:00 and XRF snatches the remains and flies out with them, returning a few moments later as the female leaves. It feeds on the remains, but between 12:15 and 13:35, an hour and 20 minutes, it is more concerned with activity going on in the sky above the platform, so does not feed. It had had its fill by 13:55 and sits on the ledge with a full crop but still spends a long time looking overhead. It flies off at 15:40. The male arrives an hour later closely followed by XRF. He leaves quickly and is followed by the juvenile. The male returns at 18:00 remaining until midnight.

28 Oct – the male remains on the ledge until being replaced by XRF at 6:20. The juvenile flies off after 15 minutes. The female lands at 7:05 and feeds on scraps in the box until leaving at 7:20. The male is back at 12:30 and goes into the box and XRF quickly follows, pushing him to the ledge and then forcing him off. The juvenile leaves at 12:50 but returns at 17:10 for five minutes. The female lands briefly at 18:45.

29 Oct – the female flies in at 6:20 with very fresh Feral Pigeon prey. XRF arrives as the female takes her meal into the box. The female fends off the juvenile who sits on the ledge. However, after just a few moments, XRF manages to take the meal without too much resistance from the female who then moves to the ledge. XRF stands on the pigeon calling to the female until over an hour later, and did not start to feed until 7:40. The juvenile stashes the remains at 8:10 but will not allow the female to take the pigeon. The female manages to get the meal 15 minutes later and XRF flies off. The female finished feeding at 9:00 and leaves. The male lands at 9:20 and feeds on the scraps before flying off at 9:40. The pair return together at 12:30.  The female goes into the box but the male leaves immediately and she quickly follows. XRF returns at 14:00 for five minutes.

30 Oct – the female arrives at 4:20 looking well fed and carrying the scraps of her meal which she stashes by a column. She flies off at 6:40, and the male lands briefly an hour later. He is back again at 12:10 for a few moments.

31 Oct – XRF arrives at 5:30 and finds the scraps left by the female the day before and feeds on them. The juvenile flies off at 5:55 on the arrival of the female who checks the box, then sits on the ledge until leaving at 6:40. The male flies onto the ledge at 21:00 and remains until midnight.
