JANUARY 2020
1 January – the male arrives at 9:00, well fed with a full crop. He remains on the ledge until 11:10 when he moves to the scrape on the arrival of the female. She replaces him after a few minutes, and he returns to the ledge. whilst tending the scrape, something grabs her attention and she runs past the male and flies out. He follows a few minutes later. He is back at 11:40 remaining on the ledge with a brief visit to the scrape at 13:05. He is back in the crape again at 13:35 when the female returns, and they soon swap positions and she tends the scrape. She forces him from the ledge 10 minutes later and he flies off returning at 14:25. The pair fly off together at 14:45. There is no further activity until the female flies in at 21:45 and falls asleep on the ledge remaining until midnight at least.
2 January – the female remains on the ledge from the previous evening and is joined by the male at 6:05. There is calling between the pair and he goes into the box after 10 minutes. when she flies off a few moments later, he follows. They return together at 7:50 and there is calling and posturing. The female then spends a few minutes in the scrape before moving to the ledge; the male picks at scraps on the platform, then sits on the ledge before flying off at 8:00. She leaves 25 minutes later but is back at 9:05. She goes into the box when the male flies in at 9:20 then returns to the ledge. he flies off at 9:30 returning after 20 minutes. they fly off together calling at 10:45, usually a sign of an intruder in the area. The female is back at 11:00 and goes into the scrape at 12:00 when joined by the male. She tends the scrape and surrounds then returns to the ledge 10 minutes later. The male flies off at 12:30 and is immediately followed by the female. He returns quickly then takes a short flight at 12:45. He is replaced on the ledge by the female 5 minutes later but she is off after only a few minutes and he returns. There is another short flight at 13:30 and he goes into the box 10 minutes later when the female flies in. they soon swap places and she tends the scrape and moves stones in the surrounding area. She returns to the ledge at 14:20 after spending 40 minutes in the box, the most she has spent in one period for quite some time. The male flies off at 14:45 and the female at 15:10. They return together 10 minutes later. At 15:55, she goes into the box and he flies off and she does some work on the scrape. Before moving to the ledge at 16:05. She flies off at 16:20, returning at 18:55 remaining until 20:05.
3 January – the male flies in at 7:50 but leaves 10 minutes later. He makes another brief visit at 9:05 and is back at 10:00 for 5 minutes. there was no further activity on camera today.
4 January – the pair fly in together at 7:50 with the female carrying an item of prey – a Fieldfare. The male goes into the box whilst the female eats her meal on the platform. He flies off after few minutes. She has finished eating at 8:15 and tries to stash the remains by a column but then decides to continue eating. She stashes what little remains by a column at 8:30. The male arrives a few moments later, steals the remains and flies off. She sits on the ledge with a full crop and falls asleep until the male flies in at 9:15 and she goes into the box. There is calling and posturing between the pair and the male makes a brief visit to the box before both birds return to the ledge. The female flies out soon after and the male a few minutes later. The male is back at 11:15 and remains until 13:20. He returns at 14:45 and walks into the box a few minutes later when the female arrives with a full crop. They quickly swap places and she sits in the scrape, moving stones and tending the area. At 15:05, she starts preening whilst in the scrape. The male falls asleep on the ledge until he flies out half an hour later; the female remains in the scrape. She eventually moves top the ledge at 16:05 having spent an hour and 20 minutes in the scrape. She spends some time preening before falling asleep at 16:50, remaining until 22:15 when she flew off.
5 January – the female flies in at 7:45 with an item of prey, a Pigeon, which she plucks and eats on the platform. She has finished eating at 8:20 and stashes the remains by a column. She sits on the ledge with a full crop. The male arrives a few minutes later and she goes into the box. She returns to the ledge and he sees the stashed prey, snatches it and flies off. The female remains on the ledge until 8:50 when she flies off to be replaced by the male. He too has a full crop and after picking at some scraps on the platform, sits on the ledge. he goes into the box on the arrival of the female at 11:45. They soon swap places and he then flies out. She tends the scrape and moves a few stones, returning to the ledge at 12:05. The male joins her 10 minutes later, flying off after 30 minutes. He is back at 13:20 and she goes into the box then returns to the ledge. They sit opposite one another and the female falls asleep. She goes into the scrape at 15:20. Moving back to the ledge at 15:45, she forces the male to fly off but he returns to sit opposite. The male goes into the box at 16:35 and the female flies out a few minutes later and the male moves back to the ledge. he leaves at 18:40.
6 January – the male arrives at 5:55 but flies out at 6:20. The pair fly in together at 7:45 calling. The male walks into the box and is quickly pursued by the female. There is calling and posturing and the male hides behind the central column. The female forces him into the corner of the box but he escapes to the ledge. She joins him on the opposite side 5 minutes later. They fly off together at 8:10, the male returning half an hour later. He runs into the box at 9:20 as the female arrives and she forces him from the scrape back to the ledge. she sits in the scrape shifting a few stones and preening. He flies off at 9:45 and she moves to the ledge. He returns to the opposite side a few minutes later but does not stay long; she flies off at 10:10. She is back at 10:35, flying off briefly at 11:15 to be replaced by the male who goes into the box when she returns. They soon swap places and she tends the scrape and surrounds. He flies out when she moves to the ledge at 11:45 and she flies out 30 minutes later. The both return at 12:30 but the female forces him from the ledge after a few minutes. when he flies in at 13:25, she goes into the box and again tends the scrape. After a few minutes preening, she falls asleep in the scrape. She is woken by the sudden departure of the male at 14:00 and she runs to the ledge to watch him go. She remains on the ledge until 15:15 when she flies off.
7 January – the male flies in at 7:45 and goes into the box on the arrival of the female 20 minutes later. He sits in the scrape and true to form is soon displaced by the female. He flies out and she returns to the ledge. He re-joins her at 8:45 but flies out 15 minutes later. She moves into the box when he returns at 9:25. She sits in the scrape and there is calling between the pair. She moves back to the ledge after 10 minutes. The pair spend a lot of time preening. He flies off at 9:55, returning 20 minutes later when the female leaves. He looks to have had a good meal. They sit on opposite ledges until 12:15 when the male flies out briefly. On his return, the female moves into the box where she tends the scrape, returning to the ledge 15 minutes later. She takes a brief flight after 5 minutes the falls asleep until he flies off at 14:50. She leaves at 16:20.
8 January – the pair fly in together at 2:55 and there is calling between them. The male leaves 5 minutes later but the female remains on the ledge until 7:00 when she flies off. The male returns at 7:55 but flies off after 10 minutes. the female is back half an hour later and goes into the scrape when the male flies in at 10:20. She tends the scrape and surrounding area until 10:35 when she swaps places with the male. He flies off after a few minutes. she flies off at 11:00. The male is back at 11:45 and goes into the scrape and moves a few stones around before returning to the ledge. He flies off at 14:05 and there is no further activity on camera. Today was a Peregrine Watch day and both birds were in evidence for the majority of the morning, sitting on a spire cross if not on the platform. The female went missing for 45 minutes between 11:45 and 12:30 after flying south. We would like to thank everyone who came to view and ask us questions and keeping us company. 9 January – the male flies in at 7:10 but leaves 5 minutes later. The female flies in at 7:35 and is joined by the male 20 minutes later. She goes into the scrape but moves to the ledge a few minutes later, forcing the male out. She follows a few minutes later. She returns with a full crop and the remains of her meal at 9:00. She stashes the remains by a column and settles on the ledge. The male flies in at 9:15 and the female goes into the scrape. He notices the meal remains and snatches them and flies off. The female returns to the ledge. The male joins her at 12:35 with a large crop and goes into the box. After a few minutes, the female forces him out and takes over in the scrape. She returns to the ledge 10 minutes later and the well-fed pair sit opposite each other. The female falls asleep at 14:00 and the male flies off 5 minutes later. She remains on the ledge preening and dozing until 16:00 when she flies off.
10 January – the male arrives at 7:40 but leaves half an hour later. He returns at 9:45 sitting on the ledge preening until flying off at 11:10. The female flies in 10 minutes later and sits on the ledge until she moves into the box 2 hours later when the male arrives. There is calling between the pair and the female tends the scrape until the male flies off calling at 13:30. She moves to the ledge to watch him, then follows 5 minutes later. He is back at 14:20 and goes into the box a few minutes later awaiting the arrival of the female. He moves back to the ledge when she does not fly in, leaving at 14:45. He returns at 15:30 but flies off an hour later. The female flies in at 21:25 and falls asleep on the ledge remaining until midnight at least.
11 January – the female remains from the previous evening sleeping on the ledge until 6:15 when she flies off. The pair fly in together at 7:50 and there is calling and posturing. The male leaves after a few minutes whilst the female remains on the ledge until flying off at 8:00. The male replaces her on the ledge and goes into the scrape at 9:05 when the female returns but flies out soon after. He is back after 5 minutes and the pair immediately fly off together. He returns quickly and settles back on the ledge. the female returns at 10:20 and after a brief calling session, walks into the scrape. A few minutes later, she walks to the ledge and forces the male to fly out and land on the opposite side. At 11:10, they fly off together, the male returning quickly. Something overhead catches his eye at 11:55 and he flies out. They both return at 12:05, the female with a full crop. At 13:50, the female walks into the scrape and moves a few stones returning to the ledge 15 minutes later. The male flies out at 15:25 with the female remaining until 16:20.
12 January – the male flies in at 5:35 and sits on the ledge until flying out at 7:15. He is back at 8:10. He goes into the box when the female arrives at 8:35 with a full crop. He moves to the opposite ledge 10 minutes later, flying off at 9:55. The female leaves 15 minutes later. The male is back at 10:15 but flies off again at 11:00. The pair return together at 15:25 and the female goes into the scrape. She moves a few stones around and tends the surrounding area. She moves to the platform in front of the male 10 minutes later and there is a period of calling between them before the male flies off. When he returns at 16:35, she walks into the box and he picks up stones from the platform, then sits on the ledge. They fly off together at 16:45.
13 January – the female flies in at 7:15. She walks into the scrape when the male flies in at 7:35. She forces him from the ledge a few minutes later and he sits on the platform then moves to the ledge. They fly off together at 8:30. The male is back 25 minutes later but flies off at 10:40. The female flies in 30 minutes later with a full crop and carrying the remains of her meal which she eventually stashes by a column and then sits on the ledge. the male arrives at 11:35, spies the stashed remains, snatches them and flies off; the female watches him go. The female walks into the scrape when the male returns with a full crop at 13:40. She tends the scrape and surrounding area. They swap places after 10 minutes. At 15:10, the female returns to the scrape and pushes the male back to the ledge. She moves to the ledge 10 minutes later and he flies out. She leaves at 15:40.
14 January – the female arrives at 5:45 and promptly falls asleep until 6:55 when the male flies in. There is calling and posturing between the pair. He flies out 10 minutes later and she sits on the ledge. He returns briefly at 7:35. The male is back again at 8:55 and the female goes into the scrape for a few minutes. They fly off together at 9:10 but the male is soon back. He is joined by the female at 10:35 and they sit opposite each other until the male flies out 2 hours later. At 13:15, the female must be getting hungry as she starts to search the box for scraps and picks at feathers on the platform before returning to the ledge. She flies off at 13:40. The pair fly in together at 14:15 and the female goes into the box initially searching for food by a column then sitting in the scrape. The male flies off 10 minutes later whilst the female moves a few stones and tends the scrape and surrounding area. She moves to the platform at 15:05 and then the ledge, flying off 15 minutes later.
15 January – the pair fly in together at 6:10, the male flying off half an hour later. The female remains on the ledge and is re-joined by the male at 7:10. He picks at stones on the platform and swallows a few. The female does likewise at 7:55 and walking towards him, forces him to fly out. He attempts to make a landing a few moments later but her position stops him but he is back soon after. They sit on opposite ledges until 8:20 when they fly off together. The female is back quickly but flies out again at 9:00 returning briefly 10 minutes later with a fresh prey item – Golden Plover. She returns at 12:05 and moves into the box at 12:45 when the male arrives with a full crop. She sits in the scrape and moves stones and tends the general area returning to the ledge 10 minutes later. They fly off together at 13:30. The female is back at 14:20 remaining until 16:50.
16 January – the male flies in at 7:40 and is joined by the female at 7:55. He goes into the scrape but is soon forced out by the female and retreats to the ledge. after a few minutes she walks towards him and he flies off and she follows. The female returns at 12:20 calling and looking around but soon settles on the ledge flying off after an hour. The male makes a brief visit at 14:50 but there is no further activity on camera.
17 January – the male arrives briefly at 7:00 and is back again at 7:35. He goes into the box when the female arrives 10 minutes later. They swap places a few minutes later and the female moves to the opposite ledge after another 5 minutes, but the pair then fly off together. The male returns at 9:55 and goes into the box on the arrival of the female at 10:30 but they soon swap places. after tending the scrape for a few moments she walks to the ledge and forces the male to fly off and land on the opposite ledge. She starts to get a little ‘agitated’ at 10:55 and walks onto the platform in front of the male calling loudly and head bobbing. After a few minutes she flies off and is quickly followed by the male. He is back a few minutes later and the female re-joins him at 11:30. She goes into the scrape and after a few minutes walks to the ledge and forces the male out. She flies off at 11:55. The pair return within a few moments of each other at 15:50. The male goes into the scrape whilst the female sits on the ledge. She flies off at 16:00 and he runs to the platform to watch her go and follows after her. The male returns at 16:45 and flies off at 17:20.
18 January – a pair of Stock Dove arrive at 9:05 but fly out a few minutes later. The female arrives at 11:45 with a full crop and sits on the ledge. She goes into the scrape when the male arrives at 12:10 and he joins her briefly a few moments later before returning to the ledge, then flying off. She moves back to the ledge at 12:15. The male is back at 16:30 and she moves back to the scrape. He joins her briefly but soon moves to the platform then returns to the ledge. the is calling between the pair. He flies off at 16:50 and she moves to the ledge and falls asleep at 17:10. She is awake at 22:30 and spends her time preening until flying off at 23:05.
19 January – the male flies in at 7:55 and sits on the ledge; he flies out at 9:35. The first appearance of the female is at 15:25 when she flies in obviously well fed with a full crop. The male is back at 16:55 and he walks into the box. There is quiet chipping between the pair. He moves to the ledge 15 minutes later and preens until 17:40 when he flies out. The female falls asleep and remains on the ledge until midnight at least.
20 January – the female remains sleeping on the ledge from the previous evening until 7:00 when she is joined by the male who goes into the box. There is calling between the pair and the male sits in the corner opposite the female hidden by the central columns; he falls asleep at 7:25. Half an hour later the female walks into the scrape which makes the male leave the box and go to the ledge. He flies off soon after and she walks to the ledge to watch him go. The male flies in calling at 10:00 but flies out immediately, the female watching him. She flies out at 11:05 returning at 15:40 with a full crop and well fed. At 15:55, she sees what looks like an ant or beetle crawling amongst the stones and walks over to it and eats it. She falls asleep and is wakened by the male arriving at 16:35. She goes into the scrape and he joins her for a few minutes before returning to the ledge. At 17:15, she moves to the opposite ledge and the male flies off 5 minutes later. She remains sitting on the ledge until midnight at least.
21 January – the female remains sleeping on the ledge from the previous evening and is wakened by the male arriving calling at 7:20. He flies off 5 minutes later and the female at 7:45. She returns at 11:30 and spends 5 minutes tending the scrape at 12:05. She flies off at 12:45 and is replaced by the male who goes into the box then sits on the platform looking over the city. He leaves at 13:05. There is no further activity on camera.
22 January – it is a foggy morning and the pair arrive at 8:25, the male initially in the box but soon usurped by the female. She sits in the scrape before returning to the ledge forcing the male to fly to the opposite side. She flies off at 8:55 but he remains on the ledge until 12:25. She returns 10 minutes later and looks for some stones to swallow. She then walks into the scrape before moving to the ledge, flying out at 13:00. She returns well fed with a full crop at 15:35 and falls asleep, remaining until midnight at least.
23 January – it is another misty morning and the female remains on the ledge until 7:30 when she flies off. The male arrives 10 minutes later and takes a short flight at 8:05. When he flies off 30 minutes later, he soon returns with the female in tow. They remain on opposite ledges until they fly off together at 10:20. The male is back with a full crop at 13:05. He goes into the box when the female arrives back, also well fed, at 13:30. They swap places after a few minutes and she sits in the scrape. She finally moves back to the ledge forcing the male out at 15:15 falling asleep at 17:55. She wakes and moves to the opposite ledge at 20:05 and remains sleeping until midnight at least.
24 January – the female remains on the ledge from the previous evening until 7:00 when she walks onto the platform and starts picking at stones. She returns to the ledge 5 minutes later. The male arrives at 7:45 but leaves almost immediately. The female flies out at 8:15 and the male returns briefly at 9:25. The female flies in at 9:45 and picks up stones from the platform, flying off after 15 minutes. She is back at 11:05 with Pigeon prey which she plucks and eats on the platform. She has finished her meal 30 minutes later and settles on the ledge with a full crop. At 13:05, she picks up some of the scraps left on the platform and eats them before flying off to be replaced by the male a few minutes later who also has a full crop. At 16:40, he takes a quick look into the box then settles back on the ledge. He flies off at 17:00, returning a few moments later with the female. He goes into the box and she follows and sits in the scrape whilst he moves to the ledge, then flies off. She moves to the platform to watch him go then settles on the ledge. She spends some time preening before falling asleep at 17:40, remaining until midnight at least.
25 January – the female remained on the ledge from the previous evening. At 7:10 she walks across the platform picking at the stones and scraps. She is joined by the male a few minutes later and he goes into the box before moving to the ledge and flying off. The female flies out at 7:40 to be replaced by the male but he leaves after 10 minutes. He is back at 8:05 and takes a short flight 30 minutes later and leaves after a further 5 minutes. the female flies in again at 9:05 and picks at stone on the platform. After 5 minutes, she walks into the box and generates a couple of scrapes before moving to the ledge. She flies off at 9:50 and is replaced by the male who sits looking out over the city. He takes a short flight at 10:05 then sits preening until 10:20 when he leaves. He returns at 12:15 and takes a brief look into the box before moving to the ledge. He goes into the box on the arrival of the female 5 minutes later. She swallows a few stones from the platform, then replaces the male in the scrape. After 10 minutes, she walks to the ledge forcing the male to fly off and land on the opposite side. At 13:40 she walks across the platform towards the male collecting stones and calling. When she gets too close, the male flies off and lands on the opposite ledge. The female goes into the box and tends the scrape. She moves back to the ledge at 13:45 and he flies to the other side. They fly off in unison at 14:40 returning together 20 minutes later. The male goes into the scrape but is soon replaced by the female. She does more work on the scrape. The male flies off when the female approaches at 15:50, tries to land but she is too close and he leaves. The female falls asleep at 16:10 and settles down for the evening remaining until midnight at least. This is the fourth successive night where the female has remained at the nest site.
26 January – the female remains sleeping on the ledge from the previous evening, wakening at 00:55 to pick at stones on the platform. She flies off at 1:20. The pair fly in together calling at 6:35 and the male goes into the box with the female on the platform, then the ledge. He remains in the box for 20 minutes before moving to the opposite ledge, flying off 5 minutes later, quickly followed by the female. They are back together at 7:25 sitting on opposite ledges until the male flies off at 7:40. An hour later, the female notices something flying overhead and flies out. She is back a few moments later but is soon off again. She is back at 9:05 and picks at the stones on the platform again. She takes a quick flight at 9:50 the settles back on the ledge. The male flies in at 11:05 and she walks into the scrape moving to the ledge after 5 minutes. at 11:50, the female is once again eating stones from the platform and as she walks towards the male, he flies out, returning to the opposite ledge. They fly off together at 12:35, the male returning with a full crop at 13:00. He makes a brief visit to the box when the female flies in at 13:25 but is soon back on the ledge. She flies out at 14:00 returning an hour later. They remain there until 16:50 when the male goes into the box as the female walks across the platform. A few moments later, they both fly out. The female returns at 21:00 and falls asleep. She is awake at 23:35 and spies something in the night sky and flies off.
27 January – the male flies in at 5:55 and sits on the ledge until 6:40 when he moves into the box on the arrival of the female. She picks at scraps and stones on the platform then moves to the ledge. The male flies out at 7:15 but returns immediately to sit on the opposite ledge. He flies off again at 7:25, the female following 30 minutes later. The male returns at 9:00 and he goes into the box when the female arrives at 9:20. They swap positions quickly and she then forces him from the ledge. At 10:30 she moves to the platform and swallows a few stones. The male returns at 11:10 and there is calling between the pair. After 5 minutes, she moves towards him on the platform and there is posturing and more calling before she flies off. He takes a brief flight at 11:20 and she returns at 12:00, then leaves after 25 minutes. The male flies off at 13:00 returning 10 minutes later. She flies in after a further 15 minutes but they leave together at 14:00, the male following the female, but he is quickly back but is off again at 14:20. The female is back well fed with a full crop and a half-eaten pigeon at 14:50 but soon flies off to be replaced by the male who also looks well fed. He too flies off after a few minutes. He is back again at 15:40 and takes a brief visit to the box at 16:35 looking for the arrival of the female before returning to the ledge and flying out 10 minutes later.
28 January – the male arrives at 7:15 and flies out at 8:00. He returns at 9:00 and goes into the box and sits in the scrape. As the female does not arrive, he moves to the ledge but flies off 50 minutes later. He is back at 10:10, leaving after 20 minutes. The pair fly in together at 11:20 and the male goes into the box. There is calling between the pair and the female then sits in the scrape. They swap places after 5 minutes and she moves to the ledge after a further 10 minutes. A few moments later she walks towards the male and forces him to fly off. She sits on the ledge preening until flying off at 12:15. The male flies in a few minutes later and goes into the scrape briefly at 12:30 then returns to the ledge. He flies off 5 minutes later, returning briefly at 12:50. He is back after an hour and goes into the scrape on the arrival of the female. There is calling between the pair and she forces him from the scrape. She moves a few stones and tends the scrape. The male flies off at 14:00 and she runs to the ledge to watch him go and follows. He returns briefly at 14:20 but is back 5 minutes later. He is back in the scrape when the female flies in at 15:20. There is calling and chipping between the pair. She then forces him from the scrape and settles down, moving a few stones and tending the area. She is back on the ledge 20 minutes later forcing the male to fly off. She leaves at 17:05.
29 January – the female flies in at 6:25 and picks at some stones on the platform before settling on the ledge. She flies off at 7:20 and returns with a well-fed male 10 minutes later. He goes into the scrape but flies off a few minutes later whilst she preens on the ledge. The male returns at 9:20 and the female goes onto the platform, picks at some stones and moves back to the ledge. at 10:10, she walks towards the male and after a few moments they fly off together. The pair are back after just a few minutes and there is calling on the platform and the female again picks at stones. She flies off 5 minutes later whilst the male remains on the ledge. At 10:55, he goes into the box when the female arrives and 5 minutes later, they swap places. She chips quietly at the male before return to the ledge. The male flies off at 11:35 and the female at 12:20. The male returns a few minutes later and goes into the scrape when the female returns at 13:45. After a few minutes she replaces him and tends the scrape and surrounding area. After 10 minutes, she forces the male from the ledge and sits preening until the male comes back at 14:40 and she flies off 5 minutes later. The male remains preening until he goes into the box when the female returns at 15:20. She eats a few stones from the platform then settles on the ledge. The male flies out at 15:30 and the female dozes until 16:30 when she flies off.
30 January – the pair arrive together at 6:35 and the male walks into the scrape. He remains there until 7:15 when he flies out. He is back at 7:35 and the female walks around the platform picking up stones. When she approaches the male, he flies off, returning at 8:00. She leaves at 8:35 and he follows 10 minutes later but is back after a few moments. He takes a short flight at 9:10 and again 15 minutes later. He goes into the box at 10:15 when the female returns then moves back to the ledge. She flies off 10 minutes later and takes a brief flight at 12:55. The female returns at 13:40 and the male goes into the box but she forces him out. She moves to the ledge 10 minutes later and forces the male to fly to the opposite ledge. She flies off at 14:15 and he leaves at 14:40 but returns a few minutes later. He is off again at 15:00 and is back at 16:30 well fed with a full crop. He flies out at 17:20
31 January – the male arrives at 5:10 and remains on the ledge until 8:35 when he is replaced by the female. He joins her at 9:20 and there is calling between the pair. He is well fed and has a full crop. She goes into the scrape before walking to the ledge and forcing the male to fly to the opposite side. They leave together at 9:55 but the male returns quickly. He is in the box when the female returns at 11:20, then moves to the ledge. She flies off at 12:45. He takes a short flight half an hour later and then walks into the scrape when the female flies in.
